PAXOS ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY (PAWS)

The Paxos Animal
Welfare Society (PAWS) aims to provide regular veterinary care and a
neutering service on Paxos, concentrating mainly on the cats. The
intention is that a vet will come over regularly but this is limited
in the winter months as it is seen as just too difficult to get
here!!! There has already been one visit organised by the Greek Cat
Welfare Society when a couple of vets and nurses came out and worked
in Loggos, Lakka and Gaios neutering the cats. They were here for
two weeks in October and during that time managed to neuter 140 cats
(83 females and 57 males), both feral and domestic. Most of the cats
operated on had their ears tipped (a “V” removed from their left ear
tip) so they would be easily recognised as having been neutered.
While the cats were under the anaesthetic, the team also addressed
other health issues such as dental disease. Cats were also treated
for ear mites and eye infections.

The team was also asked to help dogs on the island, something that
posed a problem as they had only come prepared for dealing with
cats. They did however manage to help Scruffy, a dog that had lost
part of his ear in a fight by removing the rest of it and they were
also asked to put a dog to sleep. Other treatments for dogs included
dealing with wounds from fighting.
The work carried out by PAWS does however cost money and if you
would like to make a donation this would be gratefully received. We
have a collection box in the office in Loggos or you can phone or
fax Lindsay Geddes or Linda Parker on 0044 (0) 1242 230860.
