LOCAL ELECTIONS

Politics are very
important in Greece. Greek men spend a lot of time discussing
politics and an election is a big event. Nothing gets done work-wise
around an election as so many people are involved and with a local
election this is even more so than with a national election. Before
the election posters are put up and there are processions in cars
with horns blaring, speeches, cheering and of course parties and
social gatherings. The day of the election is a holiday and everyone
votes and then, as soon as the results are announced, it isn’t long
before complete bedlam breaks out with fireworks, gun fire, and car
and scooter horns blaring away.
This autumn was election time in Greece and there was a local
election for the mayor. Paxos now has its own mayor who is
responsible for a number of issues on the island and the general
consensus was that the current mayor had been doing a good job,
cleaning up the island, and sorting out the infrastructure. This was
borne out by the fact that he was elected by a large majority for
another four-year period in office.
